While the internet and namely the World Wide Web (yes they are actually two different things) has changed dramatically over the years, internet marketing has really remained relatively unchanged. Since Google has come on the scene, the methods for success have not really changed much and search engine marketing companies continue on a similar path today to the one they followed 5 to 10 years ago.
Many people have heard the term, "link popularity" and it has been around for many years, dating back to before Google's birth. The concept is simple, use the number of links and the text of links on the web as pseudo votes for a web site and web page's content. How these votes are counted and weighed may be different from engine to engine, but the concept remains the same. Google really made link popularity a more common term when they launched their search engine with their PageRank driven algorithm.
Since then, gathering links to a website has been the core focus of most search engine marketing firms and business owners alike. But, there is more to marketing your business than gathering links and building link popularity.
This is one of those terms that comes and goes in the internet marketing world every now and again. Content refers to the actual copy on the pages of a website. The more content, real original content, that your website has the better...for a number of reasons. First, the more pages and content you have, the more lines you have in the water so to speak. A wise man (or woman) once said, "You can't catch fish unless you have a line in the water." If you don't have content, you don't have a place to send people. The more pages you have, the more lines you have in the water. Optimizing the content is also important as the actual code and layout of the page are important factors in catching the eye of each search engine's algorithm. Spend time creating real, quality content for your website(s) to give yourself the best shot at getting someone to and keeping people on your website.
